Acute confusional state, more commonly known as delirium, is a clinical syndrome indicative of underlying problems rather than a disease process.

It can be the result of withdrawal from drugs, a result of excessive alcohol consumption, or many other health factors. It manifests itself through a generalized and severe disorganization of behavior, attention deficits, changes in arousal levels, deficits in perception, alterations of the sleep and wake cycles as well as psychotic features such as delusions/hallucinations.
