Sepsis

Sepsis is a generalized infection of the blood stream. It is caused by an inflammatory immune response that is triggered by an infection. These infections are most often bacterial, but it may also be fungal, viral, or protozoan. The most common signs and symptoms include fever, an increased heart rate and/or breathing rate, and confusion. Untreated, sepsis can result in severe organ damage and possible death.
