Reality Testing

Reality testing is the means by which a person is able to distinguish the difference between what is happening in one's own mind from what is happening in the outside world. This term is taken from Freud's work on "Ego Psychology" and is considered to be the most important of all the ego functions because the ability to appropriately and safely navigate the outside world means having the ability to accurately perceive and understand what is going on around you.
