Psychoactive Drug

Psychoactive Drugs are chemical substances that act on the central nervous system to alter mood, perception, behavior, and/or consciousness. These drugs include sedatives, stimulants, hallucinogens, opiates, and psychiatric medications.

Alcohol, caffeine, LSD, heroin, and Xanax are all examples of psychoactive drugs, and each drug has different effects on mental and physical functioning. For example, caffeine promotes wakefulness and boosts work performance, whereas alcohol reduces alertness and performance (along with inhibitions). Whether taken recreationally or for therapeutic purposes, psychoactive drugs can be habit forming and some carry a risk of dependence.
