Postencephalitic Parkinsonism (PEP)

Postencephalitic Parkinsonism (PEP) is a rare disease characterized by nerve cell degeneration in the substantia nigra, a structure located in the midbrain. This neuro-degenerative condition is a complication of encephalitis lethargica (hyperlink) with the following symptoms: rigidity, gait disorders, postural instability, incontinence, cognitive impairment, slowness of movement, weakness, paralysis of eye muscles, Leva-Dopa (hyperlink to LDopa) induced psychoses, swallowing difficulties, and uncontrollable contraction of muscles.
