Pain refers to an unpleasant physical or emotional sensation. Physically, it signals damage or potential damage to the body and is relayed to the brain through the nervous system. The brain then signals the body to take action to end the pain (for example, pulling your hand back from a hot surface). Emotionally, pain is the result of disappointment in expectations or relationships. Physical pain is a normal life experience but if persistent or due to unknown reasons it shouldn't be ignored but evaluated and treated if necessary. Emotional pain needs to be acknowledged and dealt with. Failure to do so can result in emotional problems and possible mental health issues.
