Organ Of Corti (Spiral Organ)

The organ of Corti, also known as spiral organ, is a sensitive part of the inner ear which is responsible for the reception of sounds. It is composed of hair cells which convert auditory signals to nerve impulses. This vital organ may be damaged by loud sounds which may lead to hearing impairment. It was discovered by Alfonso Giacomo Gaspare Corti, an Italian anatomist, in 1851.
