Lexicology

Lexicology is a branch of linguistics which studies words’ form, usage, and meaning. This term, which first appeared in the 1970s, is based on the Greek word “lexico” which means “word” and “-logy” which means “study”. It focuses on the individual operation of words and how they influence other words in the same context.

For instance, using the word “love” may have a different impact as compared to “affection” when expressing sentiments towards a friend.
