Internal Family Systems Model (IFS)

Internal Family Systems Model (IFS) is an integrative approach to individual psychotherapy developed by Richard C. Schwartz, Ph.D. This therapy model takes the view that the human mind is made up of multiple “subpersonalities” that each possesses its own qualities, interests, memories and points of view (like an internal family).

IFS uses the “family systems” theory to understand how these subpersonalities organize themselves to form the “self” or predominant personality. Each subpersonality has a role, or a “job” in the group, some positive and some negative. This approach to therapy promotes harmony and internal connections within this internal group.
