Insemination

Insemination is the act of introducing male sperm so that it can fertilize a female's egg(s). This is conducted in many different ways by different species. While most higher species (mammals, reptiles, birds and amphibians) use physical copulation as a means of conducting reproduction, some fish and other marine species will simultaneously release large amounts of eggs and sperm into the water. Octopi have a unique strategy in that the male will, by using a specially adapted tentacle, place a packet of sperm into the female's body.
