Implicit Bias

The term implicit bias describes unintentionally and unconsciously generated judgments towards other people or external objects that influence our perception, behavior, and decisions. The development of these biases is influenced by multiple factors, including the cultural and socioeconomic context in which an individual is inserted, experiences throughout life, and exposure to media and news information. Once these implicit associations are formed, they can remain stored in our brains without conscious awareness and affect how we feel and react to different people, objects, and situations.

For example, a person applying for a job who appears to be older than other candidates might automatically be perceived as less capable and dismissed by the recruiter because of an implicit age bias.
