A hernia is a condition where an organ tissue, frequently intestines, pushes through a weakened area of muscle. The most common type is the "inguinal" hernia which occurs in the groin area and that happens more often in males than females and can occur as a result of lifting heavy items. This is not considered a serious problem unless it strangulates a loop of bowel in which case immediate surgical repair is imperative. Occasionally seen is a "femoral" hernia which affects an area lower than the inguinal area. This can be repaired by either open or laparoscopic surgery. Another common type is "hiatal" hernia which occurs in the upper digestive track and must be diagnosed by endoscopy. The primary symptom of hiatal hernia is severe heartburn. This can be managed by lifestyle changes such as weight loss and elevating the head of the bed.
