Grapheme

Grapheme is the smallest unit, which may lead to a change of meaning, in a certain writing system. It is based on the Greek word, “grapho” which means “writing”. These are often letters, punctuations, and symbols. For instance the word “boys” has 5 graphemes: , , and ; when another grapheme is added which is an apostrophe: boys’, the meaning changes.
