Gender Identity Disorder

Gender Identity Disorder is now known as “Gender Dysphoria” in the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM 5). It is the distress caused by the mismatch between one’s birth gender and desired gender identity. The distress should last for at least 6 months and the individual has a strong conviction that he has the typical feelings and reactions of the other gender. For children, their gender dysphoric behaviors may start manifesting at age two to four.
