A gait belt is a piece of equipment that is used by medical personnel; physical therapists, nurse's aide's, etc. It is usually a fairly wide web strap with a locking buckle that is placed around patients' torsos when they are standing or walking as a means of steadying or supporting them. It is used strictly as a safety device.
