Free Recall

In free recall, the participant is presented with a list of words or items to remember. The participant is then asked to recall as many items on the list in any order as opposed to the order in which the list is presented. Typically, the performance is measured by the number of items remembered. In this task, the Serial Position Effect is often noticed where the subject most accurately recalls the beginning and end of the list.
