Embedded Figures Test (EFT)

An Embedded Figures Test (EFT) is a test used to measure cognitive functioning and style in an individual by having them find geometric shapes within a larger complex image. This test can also be used to look at analytical style, social behaviors, problem solving style and defense mechanisms. An EFT can illuminate differing types of cognitive style in individuals. The EFT is based on the field dependence-independence model in which field independence is the ability to find shapes within the larger more complex image (which is the 'field'). People with autism spectrum disorders typically do very well on EFTs.
