Directed dreaming is controlling and remembering one's dreams. This is often used as a therapeutic technique in helping individuals deal with nightmares, internal conflict, and other psychological issues.
Clients are taught how to engage in self-hypnosis and meditation; they are also given memory and guided imagery exercises.
For instance, a client was able to have a more positive self-concept by controlling her self-talk in her dreams and having a more optimistic imagery of herself.
