Famously known as Valium, Diazepam is a drug known as both a hypnotic and a sedative. It is from the Benzodiazepine family of drugs which also includes Lorazepam (Ativan), Alprazolam (Xanax) and Clonazepam (Klonopin).

In a psychological context, it is commonly prescribed to treat anxiety and sleeplessness.

In 1966, the Rolling Stones released a song titled "Mother's Little Helper" which is said to have referenced the sudden surge in Valium use by housewives. "Mother needs something today, To calm her down, And though she's not really ill, There's a little yellow pill" were one of the lyrics.

Diazepam should be treated with caution and not mixed with other drugs like Alcohol.
