“Defectology” is a branch of Russian psychology which studies the development of children with disabilities (both physical and mental) such as intellectual disability, hearing impairment, visual impairment, and others. This term appears in “The Great Soviet Encyclopedia” which was published in 1979 and it seemed to have been introduced from Germany in 1912. This science looks into the young individuals’ characteristics and possible training methods to correct or lessen the gravity of their respective conditions. “Defectology” is an integrated field as it encompasses a number of disciplines such as psychology, education, medicine, and social work.
