Chronic Stress

Chronic stress is a long-term or continuous state of nervous arousal where an individual perceives that the demands on them are greater than their ability to meet those demands. For example, an emergency room doctor is under lots of stress all the time, so they stay in a high-arousal state for so long, that it can start to wear the person down. Overtime, this can cause all sorts of physical problems as well as emotional issues.
