According to Piaget, until age 5 or 6 children are not able to fully distinguish between reality and appearance. For example, the ability to understand that just because something looks like something else, it isn't what it seems. If a child sees someone wearing a "Wonder Woman" mask, knowing the person wearing the mask is in reality NOT Wonder Woman indicates mastery of that skill.
