Apoplexy

Apoplexy is a term used to describe the loss of movement or unconsciousness resulting from the rupture of blood vessels or hemorrhaging within an organ. Essentially it is a very broad term for a stroke. This is a somewhat outdated term - before modern medicine could distinguish and identify different kinds of strokes apoplexy was used to describe the condition. Now doctors use more specific terminology such as ischemic stroke (resulting from blood clots) and hemorrhagic stroke (resulting from ruptured blood vessels).
