Apnea

Apnea is a term that refers the involuntary suspension of breathing. This can be caused by medications/drugs, strangulation, and brain disease or trauma. Sleep apnea is the brief cessation of breathing that sometimes occurs during sleep. For patients with chronic sleep apnea, doctors prescribe the use of a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine that assists the patient with regular breathing.
