Antianxiety

An antianxiety agent, also known as an anxiolytic, is a compound created and used for the lessening of anxiety. This anxiety is not the passing agitation and worry that is normal in day-day-life. Anxiolytics are typically used to treat chronic anxiety and the manic phase of bipolar disorder. The anxiety that an anxiolytic is used for is a condition of extreme physical and mental agitation that comes from an imbalance in neurotransmitters.

Examples of antianxiety medication include benzodiazepines and barbituates.
