Acting out describes when an individual is behaving in an impulsive and unrestrained way. It is a defense mechanism in which repressed or hidden emotions are brought out in a negative manner. It typically manifests itself in negative behaviors like tantrums, addiction, and attention seeking actions. Acting out reduces the discomfort from suppressed emotions but also doesn't allow for real change or resolution from the problems.
