Acronym

An acronym is a type of abbreviation in which the first letters or syllables of a group of words is condensed into a smaller word. Acronyms can either be novel words that are pronounced as a word (NATO: North Atlantic Treaty Organization), words made up of syllables (Interpol: International Criminal Police Organization), or words pronounced as a series of letters (APA: American Psychological Association, CIA: Central Intelligence Agency).
