Abandonment Reaction

An Abandonment Reaction is the emotional state that is the result of events that make a person feel insecure, rejected, discarded or left behind. This is a common reaction when a person has experienced a unilateral (one-sided) loss of an important relationship; the death of a loved one, a divorce, or the loss of a parent through divorce or abandonment.

It is theorized that this type of loss effects the brain's pain center and natural warning systems and leads to low self-esteem, lack of self-confidence, difficulty developing and maintaining close relationships, and many other symptoms.
