Example of a "typical" psychology definition:
Maintenance Rehearsal
"Maintenance rehearsal is a type of rehearsal proposed by Craik and Lockhart (1972) in their Levels of Processing Model of memory. Maintenance rehearsal involves rote repetition of an item's auditory representation." |
Here's the same term defined in an easy-to-understand and thorough way in the AlleyDog.com Psychology Glossary:
Maintenance Rehearsal
"Maintenance Rehearsal is the process of repeatedly verbalizing or thinking about a piece of information. Your short term memory is able to hold information about about 20 seconds. However, this time can be increased to about 30 seconds by using Maintenance Rehearsal.
For example - late at night, you have been out partying all night, you get back home and you are hungry. you decide that it's time for pizza. So you pick up the phone and call information to get the number of a local pizza delivery place.
When the operator gives the number, you say the number over and over so that you don't forget it in the time it takes to hang up and dial the number. This process of repeating the number over and over is maintenance rehearsal. It won't help get the information into long term memory, but it will help keep it in short term memory a little longer." |

"I found it in the AlleyDog Glossary!"
I was searching everywhere for a definition that I couldn't find. It was in my book, but the definition was really confusing. It was driving me crazy until I found it in the AlleyDog glossary. And it actually made sense! Thanks for helping me figure out this term. --Cynthia
"Some of the best money I've spent "
Dr. Kaufman, I just wanted to tell you how great the glossary is. I can't believe how much more I learned from the glossary that the $75 textbook I was required to buy for class. Seriously, the glossary is honestly the best bang for the buck I've gotten on class material. Thanks for making it!
--Avi
"I wish I found this 2 years ago!"
I'm a junior now, but seriously could have used this 2 years ago when I first started taking psychology classes. At least I have it for my last year of school.
